Growing up in Toronto, I was trained by my father to do many tasks around the two homes we lived in. Being an engineer, he was very precise and particular about doing things right. We gutted the 2 homes we lived in during my youth and rebuilt the inside to his specifications. I learned how to properly use tools, paint, clean, measure, cut our ¾ acre lawn, shovel snow, replace shingles, use a ladder, repair, install and on and on. It had to be done right. I’ve never known how to do things any other way. Add to this, all the boys in the neighbourhood had to have jobs. This was a community where everyone knew everyone else so if you didn’t go a great job cutting someone’s lawn, washing their windows or getting their newspaper to them on time, it got back to our parents pretty fast. Quality work was simply a part of my and my friends’ upbringing.
I brought this work ethic to Home Smart Home Services and all our employees must come to us with this attitude towards work. It first starts with only hiring those who have already demonstrated this kind of attitude as discovered through contacting former employers and personal references where a pattern of quality work and and execellent attitude begins to emerge. You can’t train someone to have a great attitude but we do train them how to perform our services and how to work efficiently and safely but they come to us already with a great attitude towards work.
As imprortant, all of our employees have to be in tip top physical shape so that their fitness level can get them through a long day. This work is tough. The stronger and more fit they are, the safer they are when moving and working off of heavy 32 foot ladders. For this kind of work, if you’re not stronger and more physically fit than the average person, the higher the risk of injury and damage to a homeowners property which can happen if a fellow loses control of a ladder because they weren’t strong enough to stop it from getting away from them. Because all of our guys are really strong and fit, they can still go out with friends after work and have a fun night and come to work the next day fresh and ready to go. If a fellow is not in this kind of physical condition, they just drop like a stone when they get home and don’t have much a life outside of work. This can translate to more mistakes on the job and poor quality work.
We also go to great lengths to partner two workers together that really get along and like working together. This alone is one of the best assurances that the work will get done well. When two guys enjoy working together, they are happier and they seem to take ownership of the job by planning things out and executing the work as a team. Most of our guys end up becoming friends and do things together outside of work. Working with a friend translates into better quality results for you. Add to this that we pay our guys signifcantly more than our competitors, they feel respected and appreciated and can actually have a life outside of work. Knowing that after all of their expenses are paid, they can actually save money, maybe plan a trip, afford to go out with friends to concerts or dinners, makes a huge difference in their attitude at work and the quality of work you receive. It’s no small thing.
Lastly, we take safety seriously. Wearing ropes and harness’s and working off of hook ladders is a common occurance with us when working on steep roofs. We don’t tell our guys to get the job done quickly. We tell them to work safely as per their training. How We Hire
When I started Home Smart Home Services and started training employees, I didn’t know how to train them any other way than to do a perfect job. I learned pretty fast that not everyone is trainable. I eventually got very good at knowing who was and who wasn’t a good candidate.
In the current environment in Vancouver with many companies providing the same services as we do, I know that the larger the company is, the harder it is going to be to staff their company with these kinds of young guys. How do I know this? It can take us a month sometimes to find just one fellow who meets our standards, so a large company trying to find 20 young guys of this calibre is going to be impossible.
This work is hard. Power Washing for 8 hours, up and down ladders and stairs all day then washing the windows and cleaning out the gutters using a 32 foot ladder is no easy task. If a fellow isn’t in top physical condition, not only is the quality of the work going to suffer but the fellow is not going to look forward coming into work each day. Maybe even more important is that if a fellow isn’t stronger than the average person his age, then he won’t be able to work safely. The stronger and fitter a person is, the safer they are. You don’t want an unfit person who can barely lift a 32 foot ladder over his head, working on your property.
I’ve found the remedy for this. We always ask candidates if they go to the gym regularly or if they regularly participate in sports, martial arts, running etc. If they aren’t avid practitioners of these kinds of activities, we don’t consider them. Even the really fit and exceptionally strong fellows we hire take a couple of weeks to get used to the demands of the job.
Almost all of the people we hire have been to university or college. They may be taking a break for a year or two or maybe they’ve graduated and are looking for a good paying job to pay down a student loan. These kinds of guys are smart, organized and thorough. They have a good work ethic and being exceptionally fit, they come to work the next day with the energy needed for demands of the job.
What This Means To You
It’s not the size of the company, their marketing or the fancy vehicles used. The quality of the work you are paying for is directly related to the training and moral of the guys doing the job. So, in addition to only hiring strong and fit individuals, we only hire guys who live on or near the West Side. This way, they can drive our vans close to where they live so there is very little commute time. Most of the guys we hire are only a ten minute walk to the van we’ve given them. Sometimes they can park right outside their apartment. This has a huge impact on their moral. I can’t imagine doing this kind of work all day then having to commute an hour home and an hour back the next morning. Most of our guys just take a leisurely stroll to their van each morning arriving at your home well rested.
Next, we pay a higher wage than all other companies. I know. If applicants have worked for a competitor, I always ask them what their starting wage was and what it was when they left. We pay considerably more. It’s better for you having a happy, well-paid person doing the work around your home. You’re simply going to get higher quality service when the fellows doing the work feel they are valued and can afford to pay the high rents in Vancouver, save money and be able to afford to do fun things around town after work and on weekends.
Also, every Friday, we bring a nice spread of food for lunch… and not just sandwiches. We bring Thai or Greek…Chinese or a nice spread from Nuba. It’s always a really good meal that says that their hard work is really appreciated. My guys really look forward to this Not to mention that, I as the owner, show up regularly with coffee and pastries and visit with the guys to see how it’s going and they can point out any issues of concern while walking around with me with their coffee and a nice pastry from Butter Baked Goods.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that guys working in this kind of environment (the right kind of guys) are going to be much happier and motivated to do a good job for you.
Next, we always take before and after photos of the work and email them to you before you get invoiced. You’ll always be able to see that your gutters were thoroughly vacuumed out or that the moss was thoroughly removed if you’re not able to see a particular section of your roof. If it’s a rental property you own, we’ll send you before and after photos of any power washing we’ve done so you don’t have to drive there to check the work.
